Residents of Jayanagar struggling with garbage problems in the locality

June 1st, 2011

An undeveloped site in Jayanagar is being used as a garbage disposal ground by the BBMP. Due to the quantity of the filth, some of it is overflowing on the road as well. K Rahul, a resident of the area said, “A mound of garbage is seen here everyday. Most of it has been dumped by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) vans. They bring rubbish from the other areas in Jayanagar and dump it here.”

The garbage is swarming with mosquitoes and insects. This can pose as a serious health threat to the residents in the vicinity. Shankar, who oversees BBMP’s garbage clearing activities in the area said, “A Swachatha Corporation van comes here every morning to clear the garbage. It usually comes between 10.30 am and 2 pm. Sadly it is true that it is used as a dumping ground by all the residents and shops on the 20 odd roads in the area. But in the two shifts that we have everyday, we clean most of it up. The reason why it is dirty despite that is because people discard their trash even after we clean up.”

CK Ramamurthy, the corporator of the ward, said, “It is used as a collective unit for Jayanagar. The site has been empty for the past 15 years. We do not have any other place. We have done the same in Vijayanagar and other areas. Another problem that we face is the absence of good contractors. We have invited tenders. I will ensure that the problem is solved within a month or two.”

The residents of 9th Block, 22nd Main seem to be struggling with garbage problems in the locality as the waste from the markets along with the household garbage is unceremoniously dumped here. It was also noticed that many people also use the site as a urinal ground. The garbage is swarming with mosquitoes and insects. This can pose as a serious health threat to the residents in the vicinity.

Toilet ready for use, but where`s the water?

May 19th, 2011

A public toilet near the Jayanagar General Hospital in 4th ‘T’ Block, which was supposed to be inaugurated few months back, has still not been opened because it does not have a water connection.

The toilet was constructed a long back. On February 20, Cityplus even published a story about it. But now the residents’ happiness has given way to disappointment.

The land for the toilet was given by the hospital authority to stop the public from using footpaths and the compound of the hospital for urinating. “For the past few years, BBMP was requesting the hospital authority to provide some space for the construction of toilet, as there was no space nearby to build it. Now, though the space has been allotted, the toilet is still to open,” said Mallikkamma, a shopkeeper.

There is no public loo nearby and visitors have turned the boundary walls into a public toilet. “People passing by the hospital use the compound of hospital and the footpath as a urinal,” said Annupama, a resident.

Jayanagar needs parks for elderly, disabled

May 12th, 2011

Parks in Bangalore are like fast food for nature lovers. A quick run or a brisk walk in a park is all one needs to recharge their batteries after a hard day’s work. Of course, there are those who come here just to spend time with nature, away from the concrete walls of their homes. When a park is such an integral part of some of our lives, can you imagine a day when you can no longer visit one?

‘Who is going to stop me?’ is what you might think. But for some, a visit to a park is just a narrated experience or a mere illustration in a book and for a select few, a rare luxury.

Jayanagar is a place where one finds numerous such parks that are frequented by people of all walks of life. Unfortunately ‘people of all walks of life’ excludes the orthopedically challenged, wheelchair-bound kids not to mention senior citizens. The only and nearest park close to Jayanagar that is disabled friendly is the Krishna Rao park in Basavanagudi.

The existing parks don’t have ramps and railings to assist the disabled. Many have revolving gates and small entrances. The roads leading up to the parks are uneven.

Mahantesh G, founder of Samarthanam trust, J P Nagar 2nd phase says having disabled-friendly parks will throw light on problems faced by the disabled along with helping children and senior citizens. The parks will be welcomed with open arms by everyone, he says.

Stressing the need for such parks, Priya S, programme manager, Techvision, that trains the visually and physically challenged to gain employment, says that people with disabilities lack confidence to venture into existing parks.

Rain knocks down trees, poles: no power for almost 24 hours

May 12th, 2011

The downpour lasted just less than an hour but in that short time, it ravaged Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Banashankari areas, damaging several trees and uprooting electric poles till Monday due to strong winds. Nearly 40 trees were uprooted or damaged.

Several electric poles too fell down, creating huge traffic jams and plunging this southern part of the city into darkness. A high-tension wire snapped at Jayanagar 4th ‘T’ Block because of which parts of Jayanagar had no power for over 24 hours, putting the residents to severe hardship.

Besides this, at least eight coconut trees fell down, snapping power lines at several places. The BBMP Control Room and BESCOM offices in Jayanagar were flooded with complaints.

Anuradha, a resident from 18th Main in Jayanagar 4 ‘T’ Block, said, “In one month we saw power outages many a time. But this time, it was nearly 24 hours without power. I had been calling the BESCOM office since Monday hoping that they give power soon.”

“Vegetables and other items kept in refrigerator have been spoilt. Our mobile phones are not working as battery has been discharged,” she said. “The BESCOM should have made some alternative arrangements and restored power,”

Another resident, Sunanda B, complained to Cityplus, “On the first day, the Corporator attended the calls, but on the second day when things didn’t improve his mobile phone was not reachable. Even the BESCOM phone kept on ringing and no one attended.”

This playground is an open garbage dump yard

April 28th, 2011

A playground in Jayanagar 9th Block is losing its charm due to the carelessness of BBMP officials. Resembling a garbage dump yard, one can find paper, liquor bottles, dry coconut shells and other waste in the playground, which is becoming an eyesore.

Various weeds are growing in the playground, located at 38th Cross, 28th Main, of Jayanagar 9th Block, leading to unhygienic conditions in the area. One part of the playground is filled with sewage water and the place has become home for stray dogs.

“14 years ago, this playground, which was then a part of the slums, was built for the sake of the residents. But today it has become a dungeon,” said a resident Harish.

Fence, benches, poles and even playing equipment such as swings, see-saw, and other rides are missing from the playground. The boundary walls of the park have been defaced with foul language graffiti.

“There is no watchman in this playground to guard it. So gradually all the equipments are missing and people write ugly messages on the walls,” said Suguna Naidu, a resident.

Residents allege that during night, the playground becomes a den for anti-social elements that use this place for illegal activities. ”

As there are no lights in the park, many wanderers use this playground to drink, smoke and for other activities,” complain residents.

The playground and the boundary walls have also become a toilet. “As there is no use and pay toilet nearby,

Open drains, dug-up pavements invite accidents

April 28th, 2011

For the past two weeks pedestrians in Geetha colony of Jayanagar 4th Block are walking on the road amid heavy traffic. The reason: the pavements are blocked due to de-silting and renovation work.

The BBMP had removed the slabs covering the drains because of which people cannot use them. But the slow pace of work is making life miserable for the residents and also for nearby shop owners.

Dirt and dust is entering shops, troubling both shopkeepers and customers. “Because of the ongoing work, dust particles in the atmosphere have risen in the area, which is troubling us. Even the roadside vendors are facing great difficulty,” say residents living nearby.

Shop owners say the delay in the work is affecting their business as customers are facing problems reaching the shops.

Since the whole footpath is dug up, the customers have to walk like they are walking on a balancing rope to reach the shop.

“Mostly women customers come to these shops and it is quite dangerous for them to come while balancing on the slabs to enter the shops,” says Source  a shop owner. He said one wrong step and people could fall into the drain.

BBMP to demolish properties, widen road

April 15th, 2011

The controversial under-construction Tagore Circle underpass in Basavanagudi is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons. This time, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is acquiring 20 private and six government properties near the circle to widen the service road and footpath.

Inspecting the underpass project recently, the BBMP’s Major Works Standing Committee chairman H Ravindra said 20 private and six government properties have to make way for widening of the service road and footpath.

“The properties along the stretch will be acquired through Transferable Development Rights to the property owners,” he revealed.

The service road will be widened from the present 3.5 metres width to 5.5 metres and the footpath from 1.5 metres width to 2.5 metres by acquiring the required space. “The widening is being undertaken as per the directives of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to the BBMP for congestion-free traffic in the junction,” the chairman justified.

It may be recalled that amid opposition from a section of residents and environmentalists for its unscientific planning, loss of private properties TAC and greenery, the conducted the inspection in November 2009 when the underpass-construction began.
